The first thing that you need to do is to sand the area with a sand paper. Sanding large flat metal surfaces with the use of a sanding block prevents the occurrence of waving. On the other hand, small surfaces may be sanded through the use of a flexible sanding block. Inch an area that is about an inch around the area where rust is found so that it will be easy to blend the paint you will be using after the derusting process.
After sanding, wipe the area with mineral spirits. Prepare a rust converter solution into a cup. Through the use of a small brush apply a coat of rust converter to the wiped area of the metal so that the rust area is completely covered. Do not apply the rust converter directly from the can because this will prevent the chemical reaction from happening. Leave the converter to dry and once it becomes dry the converter turns into a sandable primer.
In order to prepare the metal area for paint, sand the area with a 400-grit sandpaper and cover it with a smooth coating of sandable primer. Follow the drying time that is indicated in the container. After drying, smooth the sand using the 400-grit sandpaper. Sand and spray alternately until the color of the surface is even. Finally, sand the area with a 600-grit sandpaper.
Wipe the area to be painted with a cloth that has been soaked in the mineral spirits solution. Wiping the area will eliminate oil and sanding dust that can be a possible cause of damage to the final paint.
Spray three light coats of paint in order to cover the area that has been sanded. Check to see I you are satisfied with the results. If there still are blemishes, sand the area and then spray it with one coat of paint.
