by admin on July 1, 2010

I have project to do and i need a few examples of harmful or dangerous rust removers that are not environmentally friendly

The only rust remover that IS considered environmentally friendly is sand paper and elbow grease.

Most conventional rust removers are not "environmentally friendly". Phosphoric acid is one of the most common, while co-ingredients are generally evil as well – sulfuric acid, silicates, and even a few alcohols.

All in all, anything that can dissolve rust is not environmentally friendly in use concentrations. However, some of the orange-oil type removers are a bit more easy on the environment, since they don’t consist of "hard acids".

If you’re looking at "unfriendly" ingredients, research the common removers (such as "Naval Jelly" and "CLR" and look up their ingredients). Most will list phosphoric acid.

Mind you, phosphoric acid isn’t necessarily bad if you neutralize and dilute it, but if you dump it directly, it can be quite harsh.
