Coast Guard Cutters Rusting Away

Moisture leads to rust formation. That’s a fact. And based on that, it’s pretty easy to conclude that rust is one of those that give the coast guard a lot of troubles that require them to have an effective rust remover. One, in particular, that is suffering from corrosion’s destructive effects is the US Coast Guard Cutter Bear. If only they know what’s the best rust remover to use.

Launched in 1980, the said ship was built to last for three decades. However, after just 21 years, it is already undergoing a $10 million worth of repair. And just to give it another 10 to 15 years, officials are counting on upgrades and repairs.

With all the damages that rust brings to the cutter, Cmdr. William Lane, commanding officer of the ship said that it was always a struggle for them to keep the boat fit for patrolling. The worse part is that Cutter Bear is not the only coast guard ship that needs rust treatment. With funds not yet available though, most of the cutters will have to wait longer to get fixed.

Cmdr. William Lane climbs down a steep ladder deep within the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bear.

Stepping over a pipe with paint blistered and bubbled by rust, the commanding officer ducks into a narrow storage area beside the hull and shines a flashlight into a dark corner mottled with rust, the smell of corroded iron mingling with diesel fuel and saltwater.

“I’m not sure how far into the hull plating it goes,” Lane says as he peers into the void two feet below the cutter’s waterline.

No water can seep in now. The 270-foot Bear has been in dry-dock at the Coast Guard Yard here since October, where it is undergoing a $10 million overhaul scheduled to last until May. When it was launched in 1980, the first of a class of medium-endurance cutters (WMEC) designed for search-and-rescue and law enforcement, the Bear was built to last 30 years. Now officials are counting on repairs and upgrades to give it another 10, maybe 15, years on patrol from its base in Portsmouth, Va.

National Corrosion Control for Helicopters Now Open in Missouri

Rust is one of National Defense’s long-time enemy. It’s been costing the government a huge sum of money for repairs annually. And so to counter its destructive effects on Army’s Black Hawks, a corrosion center was opened last December 19 in Missouri.

The National Guard facility is officially called as Corrosion Control Center. It is a part of the National Guard’s Theatre Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group in Springfield-Branson National Airport.

The center is basically a helicopter repair facility providing corrosion control services to Black Hawks. As one of four helicopter maintenance supports in the country, it will be supporting 14 states or regions. Its crews’ basic function is to strip the aircraft of paint, inspect for rust, treat and to re-paint it.

A ribbon-cutting Monday marked the opening of a National Guard facility supporting the U.S. Army’s Black Hawk helicopters.

It’s called a Corrosion Control Center, part of the National Guard’s Theatre Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group out of Springfield-Branson National Airport.

The Springfield facility provides maintenance support for a 14-state region. It’s one of only four like it in the country.

“”The reality is, we’ve never painted aircraft at this facility, of this magnitude,” says Richard Lawrence, allied trades foreman. “We used to paint air frames at the AVCRAD shop, however, not on this magnitude. It is a big deal. It’s awesome to be a part of it and support the 14 state region.”

Corrosion in Pipe Led to Falling and Suing

Antonio Marco Torres is an industrial worker. However, on May 24, 2011, he met an accident that he related to a corroded underground piping. For that, he filed a lawsuit on December 7 against the Eastman Chemical to which he worked for when the incident occurred.

In the suit, it was stated that Torres was about to retrieve his working tools when the ground underneath him collapsed. It is said that the corroded underground piping that remained unrepaired caused the ground to give in.

For that, Torres accused Eastman Co for negligence. Particularly, he accused the company for failing to provide him proper assistance and equipment for the job, failing to provide a safe working place, failing to implement procedures that would protect him and other workers and failing to monitor the condition of the place he was assigned to work.

An industrial worker has filed a personal injury lawsuit against Eastman Chemical that claims an underground pipe caused the ground to give away and resulted in his falling into a hole.

Antonio Marco Torres filed suit against Eastman Chemical Co. on Dec. 7 in the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division. His wife, Estella, is also a plaintiff.

The incident occurred on May 24 while Torres was working for Gregg Industries Insulators. He and his co-workers were instructed to repair a steam leak near a room on the grounds of the Eastman Chemical Co. plant in Longview. The suit states Torres was walking back to his work truck to retrieve tools, the ground underneath him collapsed, which caused him fall into a hole.

Tips to Make Metal Items Survive the Winter

Winter is soon coming. And during that time, there will be many metal items that won’t be used for weeks or even months. If you allow those items to just stay idle for too long, corrosion could get the best of them.

Your bike and garden tools are examples of the things that often turn rusty over the winter. Given that moisture is almost everywhere especially with the presence of snow, rust formation is very hard to avoid. That doesn’t mean though that it is impossible.

With some steps, your metal items can survive the cold and moist winter. That also means that you prevent any unnecessary spending at the end of the season. But what are those steps that you must take?

Well, first off, make sure to hide your metal pieces in a cool dry place. Also, you need to check and clean them regularly to avoid even the smallest rust build-up to turn into a major corrosion.

Rust Caused Palo Alto Gas Pipeline to Leak

Leaks in water systems are of often caused by corrosion or rust formation in the piping network. However, because moisture can be anywhere, even gas pipes can leak due to rusting. And that is exactly what happened in a gas transmission pipeline in Palo Alto.

The damaged pipeline is basically that of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. It is the same one that exploded in San Bruno last year. The corrosion, though found on the outer wall, is what weakened the pipe and led to the leak.

The said leak, which was found during the pressure test last week, was just about a millimeter in size. However, it is a part of a larger, rounded corrosion pocket. And according to Kirk Johnson, vice president of gas transmission maintenance and construction for PG&E, small may the leak be, it caused some pretty serious loss of wall thickness to the pipe.

The Pacific Gas and Electric Co. gas pipeline that sprang a leak during a pressure test last week in Palo Alto had corrosion on its outer wall, the company said Wednesday.

The transmission pipeline, the same one that exploded last year in San Bruno, was found to have a corrosion pocket 3/4 of an inch wide when the company located the leak under busy Page Mill Road, PG&E officials said.

The corrosion weakened the pipe and led to the leak, which occurred last Thursday when PG&E voided the pipeline of gas and filled it with high-pressure water to determine its strength, the company said.

That segment of the line, near Hanover Street west of El Camino Real, was last tested for external corrosion in 2009, said Kirk Johnson, vice president of gas transmission maintenance and construction for PG&E. No corrosion was found then, he said.
