Are there any effective rust removal products for vehicles?

Posted on 01 July 2010 by dwe

I live in Wisconsin (salty roads during winter) and I own a white '97 Nissan Sentra that is starting to show a little corrosion especially around the doors and tire areas. I've hand washed/waxed and automatic washed/waxed over the years and nothing really seemed to prevent it.

I was wondering if there are any miraculous rust removal kits of any sort, prices would also be very helpful. Or even some masking products.

Usually, the type rust you're talking about starts from the inside and works it's way out.

Once that type of cance starts, the only way to fix it is to replace the rust…with metal.

Try rusterizer Before You Buy It!

If you were to be able to look at the inside of the panels that you see rust on, you would see that the entire inside of the panel is rusted and that you are just now seeing it from the painted/protected side.

With that being said, there's not a 'miraculous' product out there for your needs outside of getting extensive boddy work done, or just buying a new car.

You'd be suprised at how miraculous a newer car can be for the ailes of an older one.

    Hi,

There are products available at body shop supply houses and automotive paint outlets that have phosphoric acid based solutions that will help with rust problems. Ospho is a brand I recall from my days in the rust belt in Michigan.

    Good luck with this…

Home Depot should sell something called a Rust converter which will stop the current rust from growing and prevent future rust. It's clear, so you would need to recoat the colour for the look.

You can perform a combination of a few things (this is from experience restoring old mustangs). Phosphoric acid treatment,
bead blasting as well as soda blasting. Removal and replacement of panels, the use of POR15 as a coating would also help reduce the recurrence of rust. In some cases it is virtually impossible to get rid of it 100% this is why people in the rust belt sell their cars after 50k miles. Avoid shooting rubberizer on the under carriage as it traps moisture. Molecular migration is
inevitable when it comes to metals, salts and oxygen in the air.

the only way to stop rust is to permanently seal the bare metal from moisture & oxygen. KBS Coatings makes such a premium non-porous surface coating called RustSeal. It's a moisture-cured urethane primer that actually draws moisture out of the metal as it dries & hardens. It's formulation allows it to seep deep down into the open metal pores and completely draw out & seal off all access to water & oxygen. It cures rock hard too. RustSeal also comes in 8 different colors to make topcoating easy too. The paint is not cheap, but a quart goes a long way… seals an entire car or truck frame in 2 coats. the paint is self-leveling & can be brushed on but look sprayed!
